Maths Acceleration at Sunnyhills

Last week I was able to share all your hard work and achievements to other teachers and Principals around NZ. 

Here I am getting my certificate with other teachers doing the same great Maths programmes in their schools. 

Next year I get to wear a gown and hat to receive my certificate from the University. I will post a photo of that next year.

Measuring our foot steps..

Today we started our measurement challenge sponsored by " Be Healthy, Be active." 

Can we walk the entire length of NZ in a day? 

This activity is designed for year 5/6 students.  However in our small groups we are challenging ourselves and learning  so much along the way.  

Here we are measuring our foot step with a piece of string.


Is this the best and most accurate measurement?? 

We tried again.. 
 

After we found out the length we went around measuring various objects. 


Here we decided everyone's foot step is a different size. We all had different measurements. 

We noticed it's not always the tallest person with the biggest foot step. 

We discussed which foot steps were the biggest and smallest.  Using ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd....) we could order the steps. 


We are looking forward to our next step!

Sausage Sizzle number problem

Keeping our learning relevant:

At our Sunnyhills School BBQ we had 6 rows of 8 sausages.
How many sausages is that altogether?

How did we work this out?? 

8 groups of 6= ?
5 groups of 6 is the same as 6 groups of 5 = 30 sausages and another 3 groups of 6 is 18 
30 + 18 = 48 

Mandy showed us on the abacus 
This is great to see the patterns of numbers. 

8 groups of 5 = ?
8 X 5 = 40
And
1 group of 8 = 40 + 8 = 48. 


Using our 5 X tables to work out a problem with our 6 times table can help us.

Geometry you tube clips

Here are some popular raps to help explain and remember the properties of the shapes.

Please spend time thinking about similarities and differences. 

Students can then find ways they can compose (make) and decompose (break) shapes.  This powerful skill is one way to reinforce and practice spatial awareness.


  

Geometry Today...

Current research states that geometry and in particular spatial skills is a key to mathematical success.

These skills also support the future STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers.

How do we include Spatial Awareness in our mathematic classes?? 

Visualising shapes and talking about how these shapes are made.  (Composing/decomposing shapes)

Here are some clues of our mystery shape:
We gave one clue at a time - most children found this relatively straight forward until clue 5, We worked as a group to solve it and then watched a youtube clip to get a greater understanding;

Answer:

A parallelogram


Can you see the multi link cubes used to create the parallelogram ( do you notice the angles are the same when they are opposite each other?). 


From there we looked at other shapes - rectangles and triangles and saw how this parallelogram was composed.  This activity gave us wonderful mathematical discussions.

An example of a problem solving activity

Hippo Maths - October 2016

Photographer William Warby snapped these 2 kissing hippos at the Whipsnade Zoo in England. Actually, it's hard to tell whether they're playing, kissing, or just shoving each other out of the way. Hippo is short for "hippopotamus,' which means "river horse."

These round, grey lumps are the 3rd largest land mammal, after the elephant and the white rhinoceros. The funny thing is, their closest cousins are another set of chubby mammals: whales and dolphins! Well, hippos love water just like they do, and it looks like they love to play, too.

Questions:
1 : Hippos need to breathe every 3 minutes. If a hippo swims for 3 minutes, comes up for 1 minute, then goes under for 3, how many minutes does that take?  
Bonus: If it keeps up that pattern, is the hippo swimming or breathing at 10 minutes?
 

Extension : A hippo can live until 45 years. If a hippo's grandchildren are all ages that divide neatly into 45, with 1 hippo of each age, at least how many grandkids must it have?

MATHS WEEK 2 EQUATIONS:

What is the question/equation?


Answers:

Making mountains could be one way to illustrate it visually.  You could talk about the king of the mountain (triangle) and how it needs two numbers to reach the top, what could they be?

Lots of combinations - reinforcing flexibility with Numbers.

This shows "reversibility"
Use the term ‘reversibility’ - two numbers equal the same irrespective of the order ie
3 + 4 = 7 and so does 4 +3 =7.  

This basic Maths Principle can halve the basic facts students need to learn.

0 + 7 =
1 + 6 =
2 + 5 =
3 + 4 =
4 + 3 =
5 + 2 =
6 + 1 =
7 + 0 =

We can move onto more challenging equations like...
Half of 14 is?
14  divided by 2 is?
How many times does 2 go into 14?
21 shared into 3 equal groups is --
One third of 21 is?

Answer:
10 is the fraction of a number what could the number and fraction be?

(experiment with different fractions).


10 is half of 20
So ½ of 20 is 10.

¼ of 40 is 10

This shows four rows of four. 
Four groups of four
4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16 
4 X 4 = 16


1/4 of 16 is 4 
2/4 of 16 is 8
3/4 of 16 is 12
